Bonfire Night
The Gunpowder Plot: In 1605, a group of Catholic conspirators led by Robert Catesby plotted to assassinate King James I and the members of Parliament. Their aim was to end Protestant rule and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne of England. To achieve this, they planned to detonate 36 barrels of gunpowder placed beneath the House of Lords during the state opening of Parliament on November 5th.
